Solving Multiple Choice Questions in IELTS Listening

About the Task

You are given IELTS listening multiple choice questions, which have to be answered by choosing from the given options. Your task is to carefully listen to the recording and choose the correct option.

How to Solve the Task?

Follow these steps:

Read the questions and options. Identify the keyword i.e. what the question is about.

e.g. keyword in question 1 – motivation

Play the recording. Listen carefully for the keyword. 

Identify which option corresponds to what you hear in the recording. 

Mark the option you think is right on the question paper/rough sheet. Ensure that there is no contradictory point later in the recording. 

Fill in the answer.

Tips and Techniques

Pay close attention while listening. The recording is only played once.

You may hear all the options in the recording – do not pick that option as soon as you hear it. Listen to the meaning i.e. how and why each word is used. 

You may not hear any of the options in the recording i.e. the exact words may not appear. In some cases, the options are a paraphrase. Again, pay attention to the meaning.

Listen for a negative word like “But”, “However”, “Nonetheless” – this usually means that whatever was said before was not the case.
