Master’s Degrees

Following your LLB degree, if you’re interested in doing more advanced studies and/or research in the field of Law, a Master’s degree is right for you. These are some of the programs you’d find in Canada

  1. Master of Laws (LLM)

This would be an obvious next step following your LLB. Here, you’ll dive deeper into the study of law as it transcends national borders. You’ll get to choose between course-based and research-based programs, with most universities offering both options. In the research option, you may have to submit either a research paper or a longer thesis, depending on the program requirement.

These programs are typically between 1 to 2 years long. Your studies would cost you about 20-25,000 CAD per annum.

Important: A Canadian LLM does not directly qualify you to practice Law in Canada, without a Canadian LLB. Your degree will have to be recognised by the NCA, followed by qualifying exams – LLB awarded by Indian universities are recognised. You will then have to pass the bar examination, to practice Law in Canada.

 

  1. Master’s in Social and Legal Studies 

If you entered the field of Law in order to make the world a better place, you can achieve that goal with a Master of Arts degree in Social and Legal studies. These are demanding, multidisciplinary programs offered by select universities, that train you in the study of society and law, in order to create professionals who can work in the fields of social justice, advocacy and community engagement.

Study options vary by program, and may include coursework, a research-based thesis, or a creative project.

The programs may be for 1 or 2 years. Tuition fee averages at 16-18,000 CAD per annum.

This program is designed to provide you with unique insights into crime and the criminal justice system from various perspectives – including sociology, criminology, political science, public policy and management. The program is for one and a half year, at approximately 14,000 CAD per annum in tuition fees.

You’ll have 3 study options – coursework, major research paper, or thesis. Your core courses of study include Research Methods in Criminal Justice, Criminological Theory, Governing Criminal Justice, Courts and a Professional Seminar in CCJP. Besides these, you may have to select electives like Sociological Theory, Diversity and Social Equality, Citizenship and Social Policy, or Canadian Public Administration.
